Academic Board
The Academic Board is the College’s principal academic authority and is responsible for providing strategic leadership and oversight of all academic matters. It safeguards academic standards, promotes the continuous enhancement of academic quality and ensures that the College’s academic provision supports positive outcomes for students.
Acting on behalf of the College, the Academic Board oversees the academic integrity of programmes, the effectiveness of learning, teaching and assessment, the quality of the student academic experience and the development of academic policy. Through structured reporting and evidence-based decision-making, it provides assurance that academic provision remains aligned with institutional objectives, awarding organisation requirements and recognised higher education practice.
The Academic Board operates within the College’s governance framework and provides academic assurance to the Board of Governors while maintaining responsibility for academic decision-making.
Responsibilities of the Academic Board
The Academic Board has responsibility for overseeing and advising on matters relating to:
- academic standards and the integrity of academic provision;
- learning, teaching and assessment;
- curriculum design, approval, review and enhancement;
- academic quality assurance and continuous improvement;
- student outcomes, continuation, completion and progression;
- academic regulations, policies and procedures;
- academic integrity, academic misconduct and assessment practice;
- external quality assurance and awarding organisation requirements;
- academic risk and enhancement priorities
- the strategic development of the College’s academic provision.
These responsibilities enable the Academic Board to provide strategic academic leadership while ensuring that academic decisions are informed by reliable evidence, sector practice and the interests of students.
Academic Leadership and Decision-Making
The Academic Board provides a forum through which senior academic leaders consider institutional performance, evaluate academic risks and identify opportunities for enhancement.
In carrying out its responsibilities, the Board:
- reviews academic performance information and enhancement priorities;
- considers reports from academic committees and academic leaders;
- approves academic policies and recommendations within its authority;
- monitors the effectiveness of academic governance arrangements; and
- provides strategic advice and assurance to the Board of Governors on academic matters.
This collaborative approach promotes informed decision-making, effective academic leadership and continuous institutional improvement.
Reporting and Assurance
The Academic Board receives reports and recommendations from academic committees responsible for quality assurance, enhancement, student experience, assessment and related academic functions. Following appropriate scrutiny, the Academic Board provides assurance and recommendations to the Board of Governors on matters affecting academic quality, standards and student outcomes.
This structured reporting framework ensures that academic decisions are transparent, evidence-based and supported by appropriate governance processes. It also enables the Board of Governors to exercise effective oversight while respecting the Academic Board’s authority over academic matters.
Continuous Enhancement
The Academic Board promotes a culture of continuous enhancement by using institutional data, student feedback, external review outcomes and programme performance information to evaluate academic effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement.
Enhancement activity is embedded within the Board’s work, ensuring that academic quality is not only maintained but continually strengthened through innovation, reflection and the sharing of effective practice.
