Student-Centred Learning Environment

At City of London College (CLC), our approach to learning is student-centred, supportive, and transparent. We are committed to providing a learning environment that enables students to engage effectively with their studies, understand what is expected of them, and make informed decisions throughout their academic journey. This approach aligns with the expectations of the Office for Students (OfS) and the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).

Programmes

Our programmes are designed to place students at the centre of the learning process. Teaching and learning activities are structured to encourage active participation, independent thinking, and the development of academic and professional skills appropriate to each level of study, including Foundation Year, undergraduate, and postgraduate programmes. Students are supported to understand learning outcomes, assessment criteria, and academic expectations from the outset.

Class Sizes

Class sizes are managed to support effective learning and meaningful interaction between students and academic staff. This allows lecturers to provide relevant academic guidance and feedback while maintaining clear and consistent academic standards. Students are encouraged to ask questions, participate in discussions, and seek clarification when required, supporting an inclusive and constructive learning environment.

Academic Staff

CLC’s academic staff are suitably qualified and experienced in their subject areas. Teaching is delivered in line with approved programme specifications and approved programme curricula, ensuring consistency and academic integrity. Learning activities are designed to support knowledge development, critical analysis, and practical application, helping students progress academically in accordance with their chosen programme.

Academic support is available to help students understand course content, assessment requirements, and progression routes. This includes guidance on academic writing, study skills, assessment preparation, and feedback interpretation. Support is provided in a clear and structured manner to enable students to take responsibility for their own learning while accessing appropriate assistance when needed.

We recognise that student engagement and wellbeing are important factors in academic success. Alongside academic provision, CLC offers access to pastoral support services to help students manage their studies effectively. These services aim to support students in navigating higher education, balancing commitments, and maintaining engagement with their programme, where appropriate.

Feedback Forms

Feedback forms a key part of our learning and teaching approach. Students receive feedback on assessed work in line with published assessment policies, helping them understand how marks are awarded and how future performance may be improved. Students are also encouraged to provide feedback on their learning experience through appropriate channels, supporting ongoing review and enhancement of academic provision.

CLC is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion. Our learning environment is designed to be accessible and respectful, ensuring that students from a wide range of backgrounds are supported in accordance with published policies. Reasonable adjustments and support mechanisms are provided where applicable, in line with institutional procedures and regulatory requirements.

By adopting a student-centred approach grounded in transparency, academic integrity, and support, CLC aims to provide a learning environment that enables students to progress through their Foundation Year, undergraduate, or postgraduate studies with clarity, confidence, and appropriate academic support.

The HND in Computing at City of London College gave me strong practical foundations in IT systems, programming, and problem-solving. The course structure was clear and industry-focused, which helped me secure a junior role shortly after completing my studies. I now feel confident progressing towards a full degree.

Teaching and Learning Resources

CLC’s teaching and learning strategy is supported by a range of programme-specific learning resources. These include curricular textbooks and learning materials developed by CLC academic staff to support the approved curriculum and teaching approach. Where applicable, selected materials are published in partnership with established educational publishers, including Pearson, to complement classroom teaching and independent study. In addition, the College provides students and staff with access to a range of academic resources, including recommended textbooks, case studies, and other relevant study materials, to support learning outcomes and academic development in line with programme requirements.
